→ Prior to co-founding Reinova Partners, Ralf worked at Brookfield Asset Management, Inc. from 2007–2024 where he had leadership roles in building out the renewable power, infrastructure and private equity businesses, including among other roles, Chief Investment Officer, Power & Utilities; Chief Executive Officer, Brookfield Renewable Europe; Managing Partner, Private Equity and was a member of the global investment committee.
→ During his education at the University of Waterloo, Ralf spent a year studying at Lund Tekniska Högskola in Sweden to focus on energy systems. Upon his return to Canada, he started his career on the energy trading desk at Ontario Power Generation during a period of electricity market deregulation. In 2001, he joined the Power & Utilities investment banking group of Scotia Capital Inc. with a focus on project financing, regulated utility mergers and acquisitions and the independent power sector (IPP) in the United States and Canada. During his time at Scotia, he started working with Brookfield and led the development of an innovative project financing structure for merchant hydroelectric assets, accelerating the build-out of Brookfield’s hydroelectric business in the United States.
→ Ralf initially worked with Reinova’s other co-founder John Stinebaugh since 2005 and joined Brookfield in 2007 in Toronto prior to the transformation of the firm from a conglomerate into an asset manager. From 2007 to 2014, mainly as CIO of the Power and Utilities group, Ralf led over 20 transactions acquiring hydroelectric assets and wind developers through a variety of investment styles including small company and development portfolio acquisitions, take-private and distress-for-control transactions, together with related value creation strategies. During this time, he led the development of the team and the group’s investment strategy. He also led Brookfield’s investments in several new asset classes, building new platform companies or entering new markets (among others; district energy – Enwave; the acquisition of a regulated utility business in Colombia; entering Europe via the acquisition of a multi-utility in Ireland). In 2014 Ralf led the successful acquisition of Bord Gais Energy via a consortium and then relocated to Europe as CEO, Brookfield Renewable Europe, to lead this business and establish Brookfield Renewable’s European investing and asset management capabilities. During his tenure, the Irish business was transformed into one of Ireland’s leading wind developers by doubling the business and adding over 300 MW of capacity built by establishing greenfield development and power marketing capability, enabling the sale of the platform to Ørsted. Ralf also led the acquisition of renewable and flexible generation assets in other European markets.
→ Thereafter, Ralf was a member of Brookfield’s global investment committee for major funds and became Managing Partner, Head of Private Equity Europe to build Brookfield’s private equity team and asset management capabilities in Europe, completing a number of mid-market industrial acquisitions including Greenergy, a leading independent fuel distributor in the United Kingdom, where the value creation initiatives included build-out of waste-based biofuel operations, enabling a successful exit to a strategic buyer. Most recently as Managing Partner, Strategy, he was involved in energy transition related business transformation at key portfolio companies, including building a new carbon capture business that was successfully sold to a strategic, new business strategies related to vehicle electrification and EV-battery recycling, and led the acquisition of a 50% stake in a founder-owned asset management business.
→ Ralf holds a BASc (Mechanical Engineering with Mechatronics specialization) and Minor in Economics from the University of Waterloo and has completed the Charted Financial Analyst (“CFA”) designation. He is also fluent in German.
